Commentators are essential to a wrestling match. They help to tell the story that’s taking place in the ring and wrestling just wouldn’t be the same without them. WWE has had a lot of great commentators over the years. Many of which we would like to see again someday. So today we’re going to take a look at a few former commentators we would like to see return to call at least one more match at a WWE announce table.

#8 – Vince McMahon

Vince McMahon spent many years working as the voice of the WWE coining classic phrases like “What a maneuver!” But McMahon practically reached god status once he became an on screen heel character and appearances from him at the commentary table have been rare over the years. But Vince did team up with Jesse Ventura to call a match on Raw a few years ago. So bringing him back once more certainly isn’t out of the question.

#7 – Mick Foley

Mick Foley had a brief but memorable run at the SmackDown announce table working with Michael Cole and then Jim Ross. Foley’s personality and wrestling knowledge proved to be a good fit for the commentary team. As you can hear in the video above, Foley sounded like a natural at the announce table. But unfortunately the job wasn’t a good fit for Foley.

Vince McMahon likes to have control over his announcers and what they say. Apparently that didn’t sit too well with Foley and he found the job creatively frustrating. One way or another WWE and Mick Foley seem to be on good terms right now. Sure, Foley criticizes WWE on social media now and again, but who doesn’t?

WWE needs to bring Foley back to the commentary table for one more match. And Foley needs to bring some ear plugs so he can block out Vince McMahon if that’s what it takes.

#6 – Taz

Taz, or Tazz for all you WWE die hards out there, spent many years sitting at the commentary table with Michael Cole calling SmackDown. Taz and Cole had some good chemistry together and they often provided some entertaining banter. For a while that banter was synonymous with the SmackDown brand.

Taz is doing really well with his podcast and he can still chat it up with the best of them. Taz is full of energy and he does a great job carrying his own show. It would be fun to hear him and Cole back together again for one more match. Because let’s face it, somebody needs to put Michael Cole in his place and that’s what Taz was always good at.

#5 – Jonathan Coachman

Jonathan Coachman was a fun on screen personality when he worked with WWE full time. He’s still associated with the company as he hosts a weekly segment on SportsCenter called “Over The Top Rope” where he covers WWE news.

Coachman has said he’s open to a WWE return and that he would go back just for Mondays if he could.

Even if he doesn’t return on a weekly basis, it could still be a nice treat for the fans to see The Coach back at the commentary table once more time. It’s been a while since we’ve seen Coachman on WWE programming and it’s time for that to change.

#4 – CM Punk

The chances of this happening are slim to none. But don’t lie, you know you want to see it happen too.

During Punk’s brief run on the commentary table he was a force to be reckoned with. He was beyond entertaining because he pretty much gave zero f***s. Punk spent the majority of his run at the commentary table just ripping on everyone he came in contact with. He was a total dick, and it was hilarious!

Like we already said though, the chances of this one happening seem slim to none at this point. CM Punk is busy with his UFC career and there doesn’t seem to be any shortage of bad blood between Punk and WWE. But we are talking about wrestling after all so you can never say never.

#3 – Paul Heyman

Yes, we know that Paul Heyman is currently an on screen character and he talks a lot. From time to time he does join the commentary table, but he’s usually just there to talk about how great Brock Lesnar is. Paul Heyman himself is great at many things and he was especially great during his time as a WWE Commentator.

Heyman worked at the announce table for most of the year in 2001. He had some great moments with JR and even got to stamp his voice on the legendary Austin vs Rock match at WrestleMania X7. Paul Heyman was an entertaining presence at the announce table and it would be nice to see him have another run doing commentary.

#2 – Joey Styles

For years Joey Styles was the commentator for ECW and he was extraordinary. Styles called professional wrestling like it was the most legitimate sport on the damn planet. Joey’s style (no pun intended) was full of intensity and he’s been sorely missed since he stepped down.

It’s understandable that Joey Styles just isn’t a good fit for what WWE is doing nowadays. His intense play by play style just wouldn’t fit on Monday Night Raw nowadays. We’re not looking for Styles to return to commentary full time though. We just want to see him call one more match and hear him scream “OH MY GOD!!!” one last time.

#1 – Jim Ross

Some way, somehow Jim Ross needs to call one more match in the WWE. It just needs to happen. For many years JR was the voice of Monday Night Raw and for many fans he is simply the voice of wrestling in general. Wrestling commentary is just something Jim Ross was born to do and he was born to do it on the grandest stage of them all.

The good news is that Jim Ross will continue to do wrestling commentary for NJPW as he recently signed a deal with AXS TV. So not all is lost. The voice of wrestling is still calling wrestling.

But there are so many great WrestleMania moments that have JR’s voice attached to them. Hopefully he gets to add his voice to at least one more someday.
